While
most early musicians were listening to symphonies and
watching ballets, I was listening to and watching Drum
Corps. I was about 6 years old when my brother would
wake me up every morning with the sounds of the Ken
Kobold DCI recordings. I was completely taken with the
power and precision by which these musicians would perform.
So it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that this was
something that would be very influential in my life.
I went to high school at Beechwood Independent School in Fort
Mitchell, KY and was very active in music there. I played
trumpet and piano and took lessons on both instruments
for many years. I was a trumpet player first and like
many trumpet players, I was switched to mellophone in
marching band. It doesn’t take long to figure out what
happened next. I was
